Andras Schiff and Miklos Perenyi
Beethoven : Complete Music For Piano & Violoncello
(ECM NEW SERIES 1819/20)
I don’t much about classical music. Most of what I do know has come from watching Robert Greenberg’s amazing lectures on, as he calls it, concert music.
To me, this is a perfect album for a classical novice (that’s me!), as we’re only dealing with two instruments and an approachable book of compositions; this is not dense material. At times full and at times airy, Andras Schiff (piano) and Miklos Perenyi (violoncello) intertwine for something transcendent and captivating throughout the two discs.
As a younger dude I thought classical music was very staid, and performances were simply about putting out what the composer had laid down. Later I learned, thanks to Glenn Gould, how interpretation exists within the realm of classical performance. As I’m unsure where the written note ends and the interpretation begins with this set, I am satisfied to simply be transported by these sensitive, assured, lilting, and fiery performances; enjoying in the heart and the soul while not necessarily the head.
