I came to this album upon its initial release, being a rabid Metheny fan. I was familiar with his work with Haden from 80/81 and Rejoicing; those familiar know their range from ballads to blues to bop to Ornette Coleman-like flights of chaos. But, one look at this cover and you can be pretty sure of what the music inside would evoke.

You would think, based on the players, it is a simple duets album: acoustic bass and acoustic guitar, a conversation between two old friends. However, Pat’s more orchestral instincts were called upon by Haden to provide additional layers of guitars, keyboards, and percussion to enhance and augment.

But the purists need not fret. The enhancements and augmentations are glorious, elevating the material and keeping true to the spirit of “contemporary impressionistic Americana” that Haden was after.

This album is nothing but heart, longing or joy in each edifying track and an easy recommendation for any fan of music. Aside from “Tears of Rain,” everything here is immediately relatable, connecting listener to performer in an almost intimate manner. Once “Spiritual” concludes, you’ll dab your eyes dry and push Play again.

Blurring the boundaries of folk, jazz, classical and pop, this album is an inspiration and instant classic.
